The report shows the cost for the permanent site infrastructure will be in the range of $2.9 billion to $2.95 billion. The cost will include site piping, transport pipes, water supplies, waste water treatment and discharge, the report said. The cost and size of the Deer Creek project could be the key factors in how many nuclear units the Mid-Atlantic region can support, according to the report. The estimated cost for the permanent site infrastructure at the proposed site in Fayette County will be $2.90 billion to $2.95 billion. The report was released in January. The estimate was published after hearing last November at the Oak Ridge Environmental Management Commission in Oak Ridge, Tenn. Deer Creek is the only nuclear power plant that has received a permit from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. If the country’s nuclear-power policy is changed or new rules are passed, the site would likely cost more, the report says. “NRC regulations currently do not allow consideration of the long-term future of the proposed sites at this point in time,” the report says. The report also says the estimated cost for the nuclear units would be between $4.5 billion and $4.7 billion. The report says the overall cost estimate does not include any on-site construction costs. Gerald La Fleur, one of the environmental commission members, said the report is valuable information for the public to see. “Public disclosure of the range of costs and the total need to treat waste is vital to continue to get public support for a new nuclear plant in the future,” La Fleur said. The environmental commission heard a presentation by Gregory Pape, the project manager at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The environmental commission in October gave the Nuclear Regulatory Commission a recommendation to allow Deer Creek 648931e174
